The massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March has caused widespread destruction and suffering, that has been seen on television screens around the world.
An estimated 8,000 people have died in the disaster, thousands are injured and at least 12,000 are missing. Many people are living in evacuation centres as 14,000 homes have been destroyed and around 100,000 are damaged.
